Add subtitles without a video editor
Subtitles and captions are not quite the same job. Subtitles assume someone can hear your video but does not follow the language being spoken. Captions assume they cannot hear it at all, so they also mark who is speaking and what else can be heard. The words are burned in either way -- the difference is what you write.
Timing is what separates subtitles people can follow from subtitles they give up on. A line needs to stay on screen long enough to be read at a glance and leave before the next one is spoken, which is why the timing here comes from the audio itself rather than from an even split of the runtime.
You can correct any word the transcription got wrong and change how the text looks, then read the whole thing back in a preview cut from your own video.
